By Cheryl Eckhart • Oct 1st, 2008 • Category: Area News

Looking to be one of the largest events ever held in Costa Rica, community and municipal officials are already laying out plans for next year’s ISA Billabong World Surfing Games.

The Games, which will be held in Playa Hermosa, next July and August, are lovingly referred to as the Olympics of the surf world, uniting about 40 countries for one event.

“[The International Surfing Association, or ISA] knew where we are positioned in Central America would be perfect, and that with the way surfing is being projected here, they know how big Costa Rica will be in the future,” said Mr Ureña in a recent interview. He added the Municipality of Garabito and the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism (ICT) “were on our side, putting a lot of weight behind this from the start.”

When Costa Rica won the bid to host the Games, it further prompted the Municipality of Garabito, in conjunction with the Central Pacific Chamber of Commerce (CENPAC) and the Asociación Procultura y Desarrollo de Jacó, to step up security and amenities for the hundreds that will descend upon the town for the event.

“Better lighting for the streets, more trash cans, more security measures, more water hookups and reparation of the beach accesses” were among the topics discussed during last week’s Municipality session, said CENPAC officials.
